GAILLAC

RED

With the financial pressures wine producers are under today, it is exceptionally rare to find a grower making a large amount of wine for keeping. Claude and Christine Rouquié are amongst these rarities, stocking so many different vintages. These are serious, very fruity, very full wines, with soft tannins which will age tremendously well. They have a beautiful deep red colour, a powerful bouquet, and a rich taste. What is more they are reasonably priced.
The cuvées ‘Fût de chêne’ and ‘Réserve’ are from Merlot and the local Braucol (aka Fer Servadou).
The Gaillac Rouges are an ‘assemblage’ of Merlot, Braucol, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and the local Duras (nothing to do with Côtes de Duras).
These wines are generally very fruity and rich with good tannin. This means that they can be drunk after 3 years but will still be excellent after 8 or 10. Watch them develop.

WHITE

The whites are based on Mauzac, Len de l’El (Loin de l’Oeil; the ‘eyes’ –buds- are far apart on the vine) with a little Sauvignon Blanc.
Mauzac
is very aromatic with a distinct taste of green apple. The Len de l’El is more floral and blends well with the Mauzac.

JURA/ARBOIS WINES

The wines of the Jura are unique. The traditional grape varieties (Ploussard/Poulsard, Trousseau, and Savagnin) and local methods and conditions give wines of great subtlety, In addition Pinot Noir & Chardonnay are given a special Jura flavour. The Lornets have been vignerons for several generations. Frédéric Lornet, a regular prizewinner for his wines, works his vines using the method of ‘culture raisonnée’.
The wine is made in the beautifully restored buildings of an abandoned Cistercian abbey, where the monks produced wine from the 13th century onwards. If you have never been to the Jura, make the effort, as it is undoubtedly one
of the most picturesque regions of France. Fred has recently bought a vineyard in St. Chinian. We now
stock his reds and rosé from there. See Languedoc Wines (above)

SWEET WHITE WINE

The perfect accompaniment to foie gras or any dessert (especially Christmas pudding) or simply an aperitif, this rich sweet wine is made by late fermenting individually picked grapes. Intensely fruity and full in the mouth with a taste of apricot, lychees and peach cut with citrus. Quite syrupy but with balanced acidity
